Description
"Azalea Garden Bridge" by Catherine Sherman.
This garden featuring a pink flowering dogwood tree, a Japanese maple and many blooming azalea bushes lining a stone-paved creek spanned by a quaint bridge is one of stops on the annual Tyler, Texas, Azalea Trail.
More than 100,000 people from throughout the United States visit Tyler, Texas, each Spring to follow the 10-mile-long Tyler Azalea and Spring Flower Trail. Two marked routes guide visitors through neighborhoods of charming brick streets, historic homes, and residential gardens filled with blooming azaleas, dogwoods and tulips. The festivities begin in the second half of March, spanning three weekends.
The first Azaleas were planted in Tyler in 1929 by Maurice Shamburger, in the Lindsey Lane area. Other neighbors soon followed, and the area became well known for its springtime beauty. In 1960, the first marked tour routes were established to help guide tourists.
