Description
"Blue Morpho Butterfly" by Catherine Sherman
The Blue Morpho (Morpho helenor) is a gorgeous iridescent butterfly found in the tropics of Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It's one of the largest butterflies in the world with a wingspan of up to 7 and three-quarter inches (20 centimeters).
The top of their wings is bright blue and the bottom is dull and mottled brown, which provides camouflage depending on whether they are sitting or flying.
They drink the juice from rotting fruit by unrolling their long proboscis, sucking up the liquid.
The entire life cycle of a blue morpho butterfly is 115 days. Blue Morpho butterflies live in large groups in rain forests of Mexico and Central and South America.
