Description
"Blue Wing Inn, Sonoma, California" by Catherine Sherman.
The Blue Wing Inn is part of the Sonoma State Historic Park and is in the center of Sonoma, California. The Blue Wing Inn was one of the first hotels, possibly even the first, in California north of San Francisco. The adobe building is known for its blue painted exterior woodwork.
The original building, built in 1836, was a one-story adobe house, but during the 1848 California Gold Rush, new owners (James Cooper and Thomas Spriggs) expanded the building, creating a hotel and saloon. They continued the expansion, until the building included an upper floor, balconies and additional rooms. Spriggs renamed the building the Blue Wing in 1853 from its original name Sonoma House.
