Description
"Danish Felt Slippers" by Catherine Sherman.
A wide range of colors and sizes of wool felt slippers hang enticingly outside a doorway to a shop in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Felting is the oldest man-made fabric. There is a strong Nordic tradition of felted boots, socks, hats, and mittens. Through the Viking influence in the British Isles, there is evidence there of similar felted items such as carpets, saddle blankets, clothing, and artwork.
Felt is a textile that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fiber together. Felt can be made of natural fibers such as wool or synthetic fibers such as acrylic. There are many different types of felts for industrial, technical, designer and craft applications.
Many cultures have legends as to the origins of felt making. Sumerian legend claims that the secret of feltmaking was discovered by Urnamman of Lagash.
