The colonial revival architecture of the Stanley Hotel makes a prominent statement on the outskirts of Estes Park, Colorado.
The hotel is a 142-room Colonial Revival hotel about five miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. the Stanley offers panoramic views of Lake Estes and the Rocky Mountains. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the American upper class at the turn of the century. The hotel, an example of Edwardian opulence, and its surrounding structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Stephen King stayed in The Stanley Hotel in 1974 as a guest, inspiring him to change the locale for his novel The Shining from an amusement park to the Stanley's fictional stand-in, the Overlook Hotel
Estes Park is in Larimer County and is at an elevation of 7,522 feet (2,293 meters). A popular summer resort and the location of the headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park lies along the Big Thompson River. The town overlooks Lake Estes and Olympus Dam.
