Description
"Exeter, New Hampshire, Town Hall" by Catherine Sherman.
An American flag flies in front of the Exeter, New Hampshire, town hall. Red, white and blue banners are draped on the bandstand at the intersection of Water & Front Streets. The bandstand was a gift to the Town of Exeter from Ambrose Swasey in 1916. It replaced a wooden bandstand that was in the same location that was built in 1895.
Home to the Phillips Exeter Academy, a private university-preparatory school, Exeter is situated where the Exeter River feeds the tidal Squamscott River and is a former seaport.
Exeter is named after the historic city in Devon, England, and has a little more than 14,000 residents.
Exeter has a rich history that dates back to 1638 when it was founded, over 130 years before the American Revolution! Many areas of the town are significant to both New Hampshire and American History.
