Description
"Harry S Truman Family Farm" by Catherine Sherman.
Rows of maple trees in bright Autumn color flank the front lawn of the Harry S Truman Farm Home, also known as the Solomon Young Farm, in Grandview, Missouri. Future U.S. president Harry S. Truman lived in the house from 1906 to 1917 and worked its acreage as a farmer from the ages of 22 to 33. The house is part of Harry S. Truman National Historic Site.
Truman left the farm in 1917 to join the Army and in the last five months of World War I, he served in combat in France as an artillery officer in his National Guard unit
The house was built in 1894 by Harry Truman's maternal grandmother, Harriet Louisa Gregg, and sits on 5.25 acres of the family's former 600 acres farm. It was here, said his mother, that Harry got his common sense.
There are several original and restored outbuildings on the site, including thGrandview post office-turned-garage that Truman moved to the farm to store his 1911 Stafford automobile.
Harry S Truman (May 8, 1884 to December 26, 1972) was the 33rd President of the United States (1945-53). As the final running mate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944, Truman succeeded to the presidency on April 12, 1945, when Roosevelt died after months of declining health.
After Truman returned to private life he sold portions of the farm for the Truman Corners Shopping Center as well as other Kansas City suburban development.
The house and grounds are on the U.S National Register of Historic Places and are a National Historic Landmark.
When Truman married Bess, he moved into his mother-in-law's house in Independence, Missouri, which was their permanent home until they died.

You can certainly see where he got his simple honesty and no nonsense outlook.Good job, Catherine.
Catherine Sherman replied:
Thank you, Laura! Truman is quite an icon in our area. The shopping center near the farm is called Truman Corners. I was lucky there were still these beautiful leaves on the trees.
