Description
"Historic Hebron Church, Johns Island, South Carolina" by Catherine Sherman.
The Hebron Church on Johns Island, South Carolina, is believed to be the oldest structure on Johns Island built with the hands of free African-Americans. This historic church was built around 1865.
Freedmen were given a few acres of land on which to establish a congregation for worship. This was among several large and established plantations on Johns Island. Local legend says that much of the material that was used to construct the church came from a shipwrecked lumber barge that broke apart in the Kiawah River nearby. The lumber was collected and hauled by mule and wagon to the building site.
This church was recently renovated.
