Description
"Hemingway House Balcony with View of Lighthouse" by Catherine Sherman.
A balcony on this second story of the Hemingway House offers a shaded view of the Key West Lighthouse in the Florida Keys. Pulitzer and Nobel prize winning writer Ernest Hemingway lived in this house from 1931 to 1939. The house is now the Hemingway Home & Museum, open to the public.
The covered balcony with a ceiling fan helps to cool the house.
The lighthouse across the street sometimes served as a landmark to Hemingway after a night out with friends. The Hemingway House was built by the marine architect and salvage wrecker Asa Tift in 1851.
Now a museum, the Key West Lighthouse opened in 1848 and was decommissioned in 1969, replacing an 1825 lighthouse that was destroyed in an 1846 hurricane.
