Description
"Icelandic Horse Quartet" by Catherine Sherman.
Four Icelandic horses greet visitors to their pasture, although one seems to find the grass more interesting than guests. "Tourists again. No carrots? Boring."
These four horses live on a dairy farm in the Golden Circle and are known, from the left hand side, as Gydja (gyðja) which means goddess (age 12); second and third are known as Ljufur, which means gentle and sweet (ages 17 and 16); and the horse on the right is known as Prottur, who is powerful and energetic at the age of 24!
Developed from ponies brought to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, the breed is featured in literature and historical records throughout Icelandic history. The Icelandic horse breed has a double coat developed for extra insulation in cold temperatures. To preserve the breed, Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return.

Thank you so much, Elizabeth! These were wonderful, friendly horses. I didn't ride any horses, but hope to return and go on a ride. Maybe even on a sheep round up!
