Imperial Hotel's old sign stands among discarded rusty mining equipment in Cripple Creek, Colorado. It's a poor end to the sign's "imperial" beginnings as a proud sign announcing a grand hotel. A new sign has taken its place.
Cripple Creek is a former gold mining camp located 44 miles (71 km) southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak.
The historic Imperial Hotel was constructed in 1896 as the Collins Hotel, and was renamed in 1914 as the Imperial.The hotel is part of the Cripple Creek Historic District, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
Today, the Imperial Hotel and Casino continue to welcome guests to its Victorian accommodations that include antique furnishings, French wallpaper, and chandeliers. It has two restaurants and a casino. And a new sign!
