Description
"Island Pond, Vermont, in Autumn" by Catherine Sherman.
Here are the namesake islands of Island Pond, Vermont, which is an area of spectacular natural beauty in the heart of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. The pond is in the center of the town of Brighton.
In this view of Island Pond, cattails are in the foreground, hills blazing with Autumn colors seem to be on fire on the horizon.
The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (NEK) got its name from a frequent visitor to the region, U.S. Senator and former Governor of Vermont George Aiken, who called the area Vermont's Northeast Kingdom in 1949. Senator Aiken gave the area the name because of the beauty of the region's working landscape:
"You know, this is such beautiful country up here, it should be called the Northeast Kingdom."
The NEK is comprised of Essex, Orleans and Caledonia counties, and bisected by Interstate 91 and U.S. 5. and to the east it is bordered by the Connecticut River. The highest point is Jay Peak at 3,681 feet.
The NEK encompasses 56 towns and gores, with a land area of 2,027 square miles. The area is a year-round travel and tourism recreation destination, known for its snowmobiling, skiing, fall foliage viewing, and the production of maple syrup.
Moose, deer, bears and other wildlife abound in the 1.3 million acres of the Northeast Kingdom.
Island Pond became an important railroad center in 1853 when the Grand Trunk Railway established international connections between Montreal, Quebec, and Portland, Maine. The half-way point in the Portland-Montreal railroad line, this town became a booming railroad center with a roundhouse, shops, and all the facilities associated with train operations. Island Pond's days as a major railroad town were over by the late 1950s due to the elimination of steam locomotives.
