Description
"Laughing Gull standing on the Shore" by Catherine Sherman.
An adult Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) in summer plumage, stands on the beach of Seabrook Island, South Carolina.
The laughing gull is a medium-sized gull of North and South America. It breeds on the Atlantic coast of North America, the Caribbean, and northern South America.
Laughing Gulls congregate at the beach, especially during summer when their crisp black hoods and red bills make them easy to pick out from other gull species. Their back and wings (the mantle) are considerably darker than common medium-sized gulls such as Ring-billed Gulls. The black hood mostly disappears in winter, when it becomes a blurry gray mask on a white head.
Laughing gulls breed in coastal marshes and ponds in large colonies. The large nest, made largely from grasses, is constructed on the ground. The 3 or 4 greenish eggs are incubated for about three weeks. Like all gulls, laughing gulls are omnivores, eating almost anything.
