Description
"Little Red School House, Dauphin Island, Alabama" by Catherine Sherman.
Don't miss the Little Red School House when visiting Dauphin Island, Alabama. The historic building, which served as the island's elementary school for many years, is now a welcome center, community center and library.
The Little Red School House was constructed in 1930 on the east end of Dauphin Island. It had an average of about 70 students of kindergarten through sixth grade. The school was in service until the 2015-2016 school year, when a new elementary school was opened.
The red schoolhouse replaced a one-room school built in 1898.
After it closed as a school, the red school house was moved to its present location across from the Town Hall, after a fundraising campaign to restore and move the building.
