Description
"Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse in the Flint Hills of Kansas" by Catherine Sherman.
The Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse is part of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Flint Hills near Strong City, Kansas, part of the National Park Service in partnership with the Nature Conservancy, which owns most of the land.
Built from limestone in 1882 and opened in 1884 when a teacher was hired, the school served students until it closed in 1930. The schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The preserve protects a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles (1,000,000 km2) of tallgrass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than four percent remains, primarily in the Flint Hills. Since 2009, the preserve has been home to the growing Tallgrass Prairie bison herd.
