Description
"Monarch Butterfly on a Red Zinnia" by Catherine Sherman.
A Monarch Butterfly visits a red zinnia in a Monarch Waystation, a garden designed to provide food for Monarch butterflies and caterpillars along their migration path. This butterfly garden is in the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden in Texas.
The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include Milkweed, Common Tiger, Wanderer, and Black Veined Brown. It's probably the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species. Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.910.2 cm (34 in)
The monarch is famous for its southward late summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico and coastal California, and northward return in spring, which occurs over the lifespans of three to four generations of the butterfly. Canadian entomologists Fred and Norah Urquhart determined the migration route after a 38-year search, aided by naturalists Kenneth C. Brugger and Catalina Trail who solved the final piece of the puzzle by identifying the butterflies' overwintering sites in Mexico. The discovery has been called the "entomological discovery of the 20th century."
