Description
"Mount Jefferson, Oregon, at Sunset" by Catherine Sherman.
Sunset casts a glow over Mount Jefferson and the Metolius River, which winds through fields and forests in central Oregon.
Mount Jefferson, a stratovolcano, was named for President Thomas Jefferson by the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition when they spotted the peak in March 1806 from the mouth of the Willamette River on their voyage of discovery. Jefferson sponsored the expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase and beyond to the Pacific Ocean.
Mount Jefferson is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc and is the second highest mountain in Oregon.
