Description
"Old and New Bridges in Florida Keys" by Catherine Sherman.
Travelers on the Seven Mile Bridge (in the background) of the Overseas Highway can see remnants of The Overseas Railroad (also known as Florida Overseas Railroad, the Overseas Extension, and Flagler's Folly).
The Seven Mile Bridge is a bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it opened in 1982. It is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2,369-mile U.S. Route 1.[
The Overseas Railroad was an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, a city located 128 miles (204.8 km) beyond the end of the Florida peninsula. Work on the line started in 1905 and it operated from 1912 to 1935, when it was partially destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane.
The Overseas Railroad was built by Henry Flagler, who was a major builder and developer of resort hotels and railroads along the east coast of Florida. Flagler (1830–1913) was a principal in Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler and later a founder of Standard Oil during the Gilded Age in the United States.
