Description
"Old Sedgwick County Courthouse" by Catherine Sherman.
The 1888 Sedgwick County Courthouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. The Italian Renaissance-style 1888 Sedgwick County Courthouse, built of native limestone, used to sport a 6-story clock tower. That tower was damaged in a windstorm in 1954, and had to be removed. This old courthouse was replaced with a new 11-story courthouse in 1959.
Wichita architect W. R. McPherson designed the courthouse on land donated donated by D.D. Munger, a pioneer Wichita resident.
In front of the old courthouse is the Sedgwick County Memorial Hall and Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Built between 1912 and 1913, this monument pays tribute to Union soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War. The monument features Vermont granite with four bronze statues representing the four branches of the military-artillery, cavalry, infantry, and the navy. On the west side of the monument are the names of major battles as well as a medallion of the Woman's Relief Corps. The monument's base bears the inscription "The Union is Perpetual" and "Let us Have Peace," quotes from Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses Grant, respectively. At the top of the monument is a 14-foot statue of the Goddess of Liberty.
