Pineapples are a symbol of hospitality and welcome. Concrete pineapples are often seen on pedestals, pillars and portals in the Southern United States. Here, a pineapple greets visitors to a house in Charleston, South Carolina, in front of palmetto palm plants. South Carolina designated the sabal palmetto (Inodes Palmetto) as the official state tree in 1939.
