Description
"Rhett House Inn in Beaufort, South Carolina" by Catherine Sherman.
The Rhett House Inn in Beaufort, South Carolina, is a classic Greek Revival antebellum mansion, built around 1820. Shaded by magnolia and live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, the romantic main house is 6,000 square feet and wrapped by porches on two stories with Southern traditional blue ceiling paint.
The house is located in the historic district of Beaufort, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark, and is close to the waterfront. Margaret Mitchell, author of “Gone With the Wind,” named the character Rhett Butler after the prominent Rhetts of Beaufort and Charleston and the Butlers of Atlanta.
The town has many literary and cinema ties. Beaufort has been the setting or the inspirational setting for several novels by long-time resident Pat Conroy and a popular filming location for major motion pictures, including The Big Chill, The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, Forrest Gump, Something To Talk About and G.I. Jane. While filing in Beaufort, many actors have stayed in Rhett House Inn, such as Ben Affleck, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand. My husband and I were lucky enough to stay one night at the Inn, which was a wonderful experience.
There are many theories to explain why Southerns paint their ceilings blue – from fooling spiders and wasps into thinking the ceiling is the sky, to blue being a harbinger of good luck, to the color extending daylight, to scaring away evil spirits, called haints. Many porch ceilings in the historic areas of Beaufort.
The Inn offers complimentary food all day long: Southern breakfast every morning served in the dining room or on the veranda. Homemade cookies, lemonade and ice tea are offered throughout the day. Hors d’oeuvres in the living room in the late afternoon and homemade desserts served in the kitchen on after dinner from 7 to 9 p.m.

Nice perspective to this, congratulations on your sale!
Catherine Sherman replied:
Thank you very much, James! I wanted to make sure I captured the traditional blue porch ceiling to repel "haints" or spirits. The Rhett has a lot of the traditional icons of the South -- magnolia tree, Live Oak with Spanish moss and palm trees. Also the American flag.
