Description
"Rusty Retired Fishing Boat" by Catherine Sherman.
Estrella de Mar (Star of the Sea), an old retired fishing boat, rests in a field in Puerto Villamil, a small port village located on the southeastern edge of Isla Isabela in the Galapagos Islands. Isabela is the largest of the islands.
Of the 2,200 people who live on Isabela, the majority live in Puerto Villamil, where they mostly make their living from fishing and agriculture.
The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands along the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, 906 kilometers (563 miles) west of continental Ecuador, of which they are a part. In 1959, the centenary year of Charles Darwin's publication of The Origin of Species, the Ecuadorian government declared 97.5% of the archipelago's land area a national park, excepting areas already colonized. The Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) was founded the same year.
UNESCO recognized the islands in 1978 as a World Heritage Site.
