Description
"Seaside Sangria" by Catherine Sherman.
Sangria is a refreshing drink on a warm tropical day, which is particularly delightful when you can sit on a restaurant patio by the ocean as the sea breezes blow and the palm trees sway.
Sangria is an alcoholic punch of Spanish origin, consisting of red wine and fruit juices. Slices of orange, lemon and lime are usually added, but other fruit can be mixed in, too.
The word sangria, which dates to the 18th century, is thought to be derived from the Spanish word "sangre" for blood, because of the red color of the drink.
Sangria as an iced drink was reintroduced to the U.S. by the late 1940s through Hispanic Americans and Spanish restaurants, and the beverage came to greater popularity with the 1964 World's Fair in New York.
The drink shown here is actually a nonalcoholic version, using grape juice instead of wine. But I can report that it was "sangria-licious." It was also spiced with clove and cinnamon.
