The A. B. Seelye House and Museum, a Georgian-style mansion, was built in 1905 at a cost of $55,000 in Abilene, Kansas. The 25-room mansion is open for tours. It contains the original furniture and Edison light fixtures. Special items of interest are the dining room, music room with gold French furniture and Steinway Grand piano, library, and the Tiffany-designed fireplace in the grand hall. Included in the tour are the yard and gardens that surround the historic home. The patio and fish pond have been restored using 1905 landscape drawings.
A.B. Seelye, an advocate of patent medicines built the house.The Patent Medicine Museum is on the grounds of the mansion and contains many artifacts of the A.B. Seelye Medical Company, founded in 1890. More than 100 products were sold over a 14-state area. Best known cure-alls included Wasa-Tusa, Fro-zona, and Ner-vena.
The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This beautiful mansion was named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas by the Kansas Sampler Foundation. This mansion was featured on the HGTV Special "Christmas Castles" in 2000.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum is in Abilene. Signs featuring Eisenhower's campaign slogan "I Like Ike" are featured in front of the Seelye Mansion.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president, was in office January 20, 1953 – January 20, 1961 Eisenhower's family family moved to Abilene from Denison, Texas in 1892. Eisenhower attended elementary school through high school in Abilene, graduating in 1909. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum is the burial site of President Eisenhower, his wife, Mamie, and their first-born son Doud Dwight.
