Description
"Sibelius Monument, Helsinki, Finland" by Catherine Sherman.
The Sibelius Monument in Helsinki, Finland, is a popular stop for tourists, who clamber over the rocky foundation. The monument is dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865 to 1957) and is located at the Sibelius Park in the district of Toolo.
The monument is a sculpture by Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen titled Passio Musicae and unveiled on September 7, 1967. The modern piece sparked a debate about the merits and flaws of abstract art, so a sculpture of a Sibelius portrait was included in the work.
The monument consists of series of more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together in a wave-like pattern. The artist hoped to capture the essence of the music of Sibelius.
A smaller version of the monument is located at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. A work with a similar concept, also designed by Hiltunen, is located at the grounds of the United Nations headquarters.
Finnish: Sibelius-monumentti (Sibelius Monument), Sibeliuspuisto (Sibelius Park)
