Description
"St. Fidelis Stained Glass Window, Victoria, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman.
Votive lights glow in a stand in front of a brilliantly colored stained glass window in St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, Kansas. The window's design is of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Known as the Cathedral of the Plains, the church features many beautiful stained glass windows. The church contained only uncolored glass when it was completed in 1911. In 1915, a search was undertaken to find stained glass. Inspired by stained glass windows in St. Ann's Church in Olmitz, Kansas, the Munich Art Glass company of Chicago was contracted to design and build the windows in St. Fidelis. The windows were installed in 1916, under the direction of German artist Mr. Hans Muench, who came to Victoria and worked from May to October of that year. The total price for the windows was $3,700.
St. Fidelis is a Romanesque-style Roman Catholic parish church in Victoria, Kansas, United States, built of limestone. It was raised to the status of a Minor Basilica in 2014 and is also known as The Basilica of the Plains.
The church was built between 1908 and 1911. Former presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan gave the church the nickname "The Cathedral of the Plains" after he visited the town in 1912. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
