Description
"Stanley Hotel Porch" by Catherine Sherman.
Wicker furniture adorns the front porch of The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Late afternoon sunshine washes over the porch on a November day. The edge of one of the many American flags flying on the front of the hotel can be seen.
The hotel is a 142-room Colonial Revival hotel about five miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. the Stanley offers panoramic views of Lake Estes and the Rocky Mountains. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the American upper class at the turn of the century. The hotel, an example of Edwardian opulence, and its surrounding structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Stephen King stayed in The Stanley Hotel in 1974 as a guest, inspiring him to change the locale for his novel The Shining from an amusement park to the Stanley's fictional stand-in, the Overlook Hotel
