Description
"Tyler, Texas, Theater Sign" by Catherine Sherman
All that remains of the Tyler Theater is the sign, which is in Downtown Tyler, Texas. The Tyler Theater, opened in 1940 by the Interstate Syndicate, was closed in the late 1970s and gutted for retail.
The Boxoffice issue of August 10, 1940 stated that the Tyler Theater opened to overflowing crowds with “The Great McGinty” as the feature film and with actor Brian Donlevy in attendance.
According to Boxoffice, Interstate hired theater architect W. Scott Dunn to design the theater. Unfortunately, Dunn died before beginning the project. The theater was ultimately designed in an Art Moderne style by the firm of Pettigrew & Worley, who also designed other Interstate theaters.
