Description
"View of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos Islands" by Catherine Sherman.
The lava flow of Santiago Island provides the foreground for a view of Bartolome Island, famous for Pinnacle Rock, a towering spearheaded obelisk that rises from the shore and is the best known landmark in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.
Sullivan Bay separates the two islands. A 2,000-foot boardwalk and set of stairs lead to the top of Bartolome for an iconic view.
The lava flow on Santiago Island was formed in the second half of the 19th century. A trail at Sullivan Bay crosses relatively flat, black pahoehoe (rope-like) lava, dotted with a series of pyroclastic cones. Along the inland section of the trail, older, reddish-yellow-colored tuff cones stand out in the middle of the lava flow.
The Galapagos Islands and their surrounding waters form an Ecuadorian province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve.
The islands are famed for their vast number of endemic (unique) species and were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle.
The Galapagos Islands were designated a World Heritage Site in 1978.
