Description
"Welty's General Store Sign, Dubois, Wyoming" by Catherine Sherman
A cowboy on a bucking bronco on a wood plank design is featured on the sign for historic Welty's General Store in Dubois, Wyoming.
Frank A. Welty first established the store in 1897 in a log cabin outside of Dubois in 1889 on land next to the homestead cabin of his father, Dr. Francis Welty. In 1898, Welty bought an existing store in town, dismantled his log cabin building and added it to the town building. Both buildings were constructed of logs with a sod roof.
Welty added onto the store a few more times. Welty's store offered a wide range of merchandise to the isolated community, which is about 80 miles southeast of the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The general store was also the post office and Dr. Welty's medical office until he died in 1919. Welty's was also a John Deer dealer and stocked farm and ranch supplies.
After Frank died, his son Frank Jr. took over operations. Now the store is operated by the founder's grandson, Frank A. Welty III. The store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
