Description
"Elk Herd at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming" by Catherine Sherman.
An elk calf stares at onlookers while the rest of the female herd ignores the crowd (at a safe distance) as they graze at dusk on the lawn of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The elk gather on the lawn in the evening when it's cooler. This photograph was taken in early September 2019.
Mammoth Hot Springs is near the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
The elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Northeast Asia. This animal should not be confused with the still larger moose (Alces alces) to which the name "elk" applies in British English and in reference to populations in Eurasia.
