Description
"American Magpie on a Fence in Grand Teton National Park" by Catherine Sherman.
An American Magpie perches on a fence surrounding farm buildings in Mormon Row, an historic district in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Also known as the black-billed magpie (Pica hudsonia), the American magpie is a bird in the corvidae family found in the western half of North America. It is black and white, with black areas on the wings and tail showing iridescent hints of blue or blue-green. It is one of only four North American songbirds whose tail makes up half or more of the total body length.
The Mormon Row district, in Teton County, consists of homesteads along the Jackson-Moran Road near the southeast corner of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, comprising elements such as houses, corrals, fields, barns and drainage systems. The rural historic landscape's period of significance includes the construction of the Andy Chambers, T.A. Moulton and John Moulton farms from 1908 to the 1950s.
I've been trying to get a photo of an American Magpie for a long time, but they always flew away when I got close. This magpie was eager to get his portrait taken. He followed me, perching on different sections of the fence, turning his head from side to side to make sure I captured all of the beautiful angles of his head. I should have gotten even closer, but I didn't want to scare him.
