Description
"Blue-Footed Booby on Lichen Lava, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador" by Catherine Sherman.
A blue-footed booby stands on the lichen-encrusted lava formations of Los Tuneles (The Tunnels), south of Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.
The marine sanctuary of Los Tuneles features numerous tunnels, arches and tubes formed from lava from a volcano on the island of Isabela. Manta rays, sea horses, sharks, turtles and numerous fish live underwater, while blue-footed boobies and penguins live on the rocks above. Prickly pear cactus grow on the lichen-covered rocks.
Los Tuneles is a 45- to 60-minute boat ride from Puerto Villamil on the island of Isabela in the Galapagos Islands of the Ecuador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The blue color of the blue-footed booby's webbed feet comes from carotenoid pigments obtained from its diet of fresh fish. The blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) is a marine bird native to subtropical and tropical regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean.
