Description
"Blue Wild Indigo, Flint Hills, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman.
A Blue Wild Indigo blooms in May in the Tall Grass prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
Also known as Blue False Indigo, this flowering plant (Baptisia australis) is a herbaceous perennial in the legume family (Fabaceae). Several Native America tribes used the plant for a variety of purposes, including a source of blue dye, a practice later copied by European settlers.
The plant is native to much of central and eastern North America and is particularly common in the Midwest.
