Description
"Crowned Pretzel Sign With Cupids in Denmark" by Catherine Sherman.
Cupids flank a crowned pretzel sign in The Old Town, an outdoor museum in Aarhus, Denmark.
The pretzel has been in use as an emblem of bakers and formerly their guilds in southern German areas since at least the 12th century. A 12th-century illustration in the Hortus deliciarum from the southwest German Alsace region (today France) may contain the earliest depiction of a pretzel.
The Old Town in Aarhus, Denmark (Danish: Den Gamle By), is an open-air town museum, consisting of 75 historical buildings collected from 20 Danish townships. In 1914 the museum opened as the world's first open-air museum of its kind, concentrating on town culture rather than village culture. More than three million people visit each year.
The museum buildings are organized into a small town of mostly half-timbered structures originally erected between 1550 and the late 19th century and later moved to Aarhus during the 20th century. Many signs featuring available goods mark other shops.
