Description
"Green Iguana in the Shade of a Palm Tree" by Catherine Sherman.
A green iguana rests in the shade of a palm tree along a canal in a Florida Keys neighborhood.
The green iguana (Iguana iguana), also known as the American iguana, is a large, arboreal, mostly herbivorous species of lizard of the genus Iguana.
The word "iguana" is derived from the original Taino name for the species, iwana.
Green iguanas were first reported in Florida in the 1960s in Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne along Miami-Dade County’s southeastern coast. Green iguana populations now stretch along the Atlantic Coast in Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties and along the Gulf Coast in Collier and Lee Counties. They are considered an invasive species in Florida, by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
