Description
"Harris's Hawk" by Catherine Sherman.
The Harris's Hawk( Parabuteo unicinctus) is a medium-large bird of prey with a range from southwestern United States and the arid regions of Mexico to the western coast of South America. The Harris's Hawk is intelligent and easy to train. Known as the "Wolf of the Desert," the Harris's hawk will hunt in groups. It doesn't mind being touched, and I got to pet him.
This hawk is two years old and its trainer, who bred the bird, said that it was trained in three months to return to the falconer. This hawk is one of about 300 birds, including eagles and macaws, that were bred and belong to this company, which regularly takes birds of prey to resorts in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico to discourage other birds from hanging out at the pools and dining areas.
This bird breeding company has been in business for five generations. Nineteen of its birds live in the owners' house, where they "live like kings."
