Description
"Oldest House in America, Santa Fe, New Mexico" by Catherine Sherman.
Two doors open into the De Vargas Street House, an adobe house located at 215 East De Vargas Street on the eastern side of Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico within the Barrio De Analco Historic District. The house is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in America.
The word "analco" means "across the water" in the language of the Tlaxcalans, the Indians who arrived from Mexico with the first Spanish settlers under the leadership of Juan de Onate in 1598.
Tree-rings date the house to about 1650. Some believe the structure may be much older, perhaps, dating to the 1200s AD. There's not a lot of documentation about the origins of this house. It's built on the site ruins of older Pueblo settlements which had been abandoned. The Tlaxcalans and Spanish who settled along the river probably followed the practice of the Pueblo people and used the land down to the river for farming.
