Artist's Description
"Silverton, Colorado, Congregational Church" by Catherine Sherman.
Rain, snow and shine, the First Congregational Church of Silverton has served the people of Silverton, Colorado since 1878 and is one of the oldest Congregational Churches in the State of Colorado. Here a brief rainstorm moves over the mountains into the town.
The sanctuary building was dedicated in 1881, the steeple added in 1892. The parsonage to the south was completed in 1884.
The church acted as the "host" sanctuary for most of the various religions as they settled in Silverton. The first Catholic Mass in Silverton on December 24, 1882 was held in the sanctuary. The Episcopal Society regularly met in the church. The Baptist church also held services in the sanctuary. The building has also been the site of many municipal and cultural groups. Historically, the Theater Group and the Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band have used the sanctuary for practices and rehearsals.
