Description
"Fort Osage, Missouri, American Flag" by Catherine Sherman.
An American Flag with fifteen stars and fifteen stripes flies at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark in Missouri. This flag was in use May 1, 1795 until July 3, 1818, when the flag was changed to have 20 stars, with a new star to be added when each new state was admitted, but the number of stripes would be reduced to 13 so as to honor the original colonies.
Fort Osage (also known as Fort Clark or Fort Sibley) was part of the United States factory trading post system for the Osage Nation in the early 19th century in present day Sibley, Missouri.
Fort Osage was one of the most successful of the 28 government-supervised trading posts that functioned from 1795 to 1822.
A replica of the fort was rebuilt on the site between 1948 and 1961. Re-enactors carry out activities at the fort. A jet flying over head adds a modern touch.
This photograph was taken in 2013.
