Description
"Red Barn and Flag" by Catherine Sherman.
An advertising sign and stylized flag adorn the side of a red barn.
The vintage flag with its 18 stars was made to celebrate the admission of Louisiana as the 18th state in 1812, although I don't think it was ever an official flag. It should have thirteen stripes, as well. The number of stripes and the number of stars and their arrangement have changed as states have joined the union. From 1795 to 1818, there were fifteen stripes, but the flag has remained at 13 stripes since 1818. Can you imagine a flag with 50 stripes!
I learned at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York, that barns are painted red, because the tint of iron oxide, otherwise known as rust, was cheap and easy to obtain. Some say that the iron oxide in the paint inhibited mold growth, too.
