Description
"Red-spotted Purple Butterfly on Sedum" by Catherine Sherman.
Sedum is a popular nectar source for butterflies in the Autumn. Here a Red-spotted Purple butterfly (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) nectars on the pink blossoms of the sedum, also called stonecrop.
The red-spotted purple, common throughout much of the eastern United States, is a mimic of the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) and is typically found in open woodlands and along forest edges.
L. a. astyanax has red spots on its underside and the top of the wings are notable for their iridescent blue markings. Another form is the white admiral, L. a. arthemis, which has a large white band traversing both the forewings and hindwings.
