Description
"Church in Hanalei, Kauai " by Catherine Sherman.
Wai`oli Hui`ia, a church in Hanalei on the north shore of Kauai, is a popular subject of photographs and paintings. The church welcomes visitors to services.
This shingled church was built in the American Gothic architectural style in 1912. The belfry tower houses the old Mission Bell. This bell was rung throughout the years, calling people to worship since 1843. The mission itself in earlier buildings has had had a continuous record of service since 1834. The current building survived two hurricanes before being significantly damaged by Iniki in 1992, requiring major restoration.
Having survived two previous hurricanes, the current church building had to be restored after significant damage from Hurricane Iniki in 1992. The church and the Mission Hall are on the state and national register of historic places.
