About 1.25 million alligators live in the state of Florida. Alligators inhabit Florida's marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes in all 67 Florida counties, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a large crocodilian reptile endemic to the southeastern United States. It is one of two living species in the genus Alligator within the family Alligatoridae.
