Description
"Peter the Great Walks Among the Tourists" by Catherine Sherman.
A man dressed as Tsar Peter the Great of Russia greets tourists in the gardens in front of St. Issac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. A little boy holding his mother's hand seems dubious about this imposter. Other tourists find different attractions more worthy of a photograph than the Tsar.
Peter the Great (1672-1725) implemented sweeping reforms aimed at modernizing Russia. He was heavily influenced by his advisors from Western Europe.
Many tourists visit St. Isaac's Cathedral, which was originally St. Petersburg's main church and the largest cathedral in Russia. It was built between 1818 and 1858 and is one of the most impressive landmarks of the Russian Imperial capital.
