Description
"Sheep Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, in November" by Catherine Sherman.
In early November, a snow shower dusts the Fall River Valley, which is flanked on the left by Sundance Mountain (12,466 feet) and Mt. Chapin (12,454 feet) on the right. This magnificent valley is in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
In the foreground is one of the Sheep Lakes, in the West Horseshoe Park area of RMNP. The lakes are kettle ponds, which were formed about 15,000 years ago by massive glacier blocks of ice. Bighorn sheep regularly come down from the mountainsides during the day to visit these small lakes to get nutrients from the mineral-rich mud. Rangers halt traffic to let the sheep cross the road.
