Description
"Sheep Sorting Corral by a Fjord, Iceland" by Catherine Sherman.
In Iceland in September or October in Iceland, farmers round up herds of sheep on foot, horses or in vehicles. This corral is next to a fjord in northwest Iceland.
The annual Réttir (round up) events take place usually on weekends, all around the countryside. It’s one of the country’s oldest traditions where Icelandic sheep farmers invite family, friends and anyone who’s interested, to help out with gathering the sheep from the mountains and valleys where they’ve been grazing for summer. There are parties after the work is done.
In the Spring, the sheep are released from their winter quarters, and are allowed to roam freely in the hills, where they face few dangers. After spending the winter in sheep barns, they are gathered in the fall to be returned to the barns. Farmers in each area band together to collect the sheep, which have identifying tags in their ears. The sheep are herded into circular corrals, where they are separated according to ownership and returned to the sheep barns on each farmer's farm.
