Description
"Three Riders in the Kansas Flint Hills" by Catherine Sherman.
At sunset, three riders hurry to an area to be burned in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Smoke already fills the skies and plumes rise in the valley beyond.
Ranchers replicate natural fires when they burn the prairie every few years to destroy tree seedlings and alien plant species, which preserves the prairie as a grassland. The tallgrass prairie biome depends on prairie fires, a form of wildfire, for its survival and renewal.
The tallgrass prairie survives in areas unsuited to plowing, such as this section of the rocky hill country of the Flint Hills, which run north to south through east-central Kansas. Once vast, tallgrass prairie has shrunk to only one to four percent of its former size in North America.
This photograph received third place in photography in the Visions of the Flint Hills Art Show at the Buttonwood Art Space in 2015.

Congratulations on this special feature "Images that tell a Story" in the Women Photographers group, for 3-28-2018. Selections were curated from images that had been in the group for quite some time, some dating back to 2013. Most all chosen were those that made me curious enough to look closer at the image and discover the stories behind them. You are invited to archive this image in the discussion for members titled "Images that tell a Story." Thank you for your participation in our group!
