In 1743, the son of Major John Boone planted live oak trees, arranging them in two evenly spaced rows, creating a spectacular approach to his home. It took two centuries for the massive, Spanish moss-draped branches to meet overhead, forming today�s natural corridor that is nearly a mile long.
The plantation sits on Wampacheeoone Creek in Christ Church Parish about 10 miles (16 km) from historic downtown Charleston.
Boone Hall Plantation is one of America's oldest still working plantations, continually growing crops for over 320 years. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.
The earliest known reference to the site is 1681. The land grant of 470 acres (1.9 km2) was given by Theophilus Patey as a wedding present to his daughter, Elizabeth, and Major John Boone. The original wooden house was constructed in 1790. The house that stands now was built by Thomas Stone, a Canadian who purchased the land in the early 20th century. He wanted a "grander style" home, so he built the Colonial Revival-style house that stands there today. The bricks in the house were taken from the brickyard on the plantation, run by the Horlbeck family that owned the property for many years.
The house and grounds have appeared in NBC's television soap opera Days of Our Lives, ABC's mini-series North and South (as Mont Royal) and the movies Queen and The Notebook.[6] The house, gardens, and other places of interest are open to the public for tours all year round.
There are several slave cabins on the site that display African American history exhibits. The plantation was named one of the African American Historic Places in South Carolina.
