Description
"Golden Gate Bridge in Fog" by Catherine Sherman.
The top of the Golden Gate Bridge is shrouded in fog on a September day, from this view at the H. Dana Bowers Northbound rest area in Marin County, across the bay from the city of San Francisco.
At the time of its opening in 1937, The Golden Gate Bridge was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and a total height of 746 feet (227 m).
The bridge spans the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, California—the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula—to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is recognized around the world as a top symbol of San Francisco and of California. It was initially designed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers and it is one of the top most internationally recognized symbols of both San Francisco and California.
